Harapan women MPs claim Dr M spoke of graft, did not fat-shame

Wanita PKR chief says Mahathir's remarks cannot be compared to Tengku Adnan's advice on how to avoid public harassment.
Several Pakatan Harapan women lawmakers defended Dr Mahathir Mohamad against the accusation that his remarks during a speech in Kedah were akin to shaming people who were overweight.
Wanita PKR chief Zuraida Kamaruddin told Malaysiakini that the former premier's remarks should be taken in the context of rejecting corruption.
"Mahathir did not insult a woman's physique, but the practice of corruption," said the Ampang MP.
Zuraida also insisted that Mahathir's remarks cannot be compared to Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor's advice for women to dress in a shabby manner to avoid being harassed in public.
"It is two different issues. Tengku Adnan was talking about dressing shabbily regardless of size. Tun (Mahathir) was referring to being 'fat' from corruption," she argued.
In a video of the speech, Mahathir had said that he is slim because he does not "makan rasuah" (take bribes).
"I do not want to become fat like some people... like someone's wife. When she walks, her gearbox tilts," he said, waving his arms up and down to mimick how the person walked.
Though Mahathir did not mention names, the Parti Pribumi Malaysia Bersatu (Bersatu) chairperson appeared to be targeting Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's wife Rosmah Mansor.
Meanwhile, Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching said Mahathir was only focusing on the alleged corruption involving Rosmah's family.
"I don't think Rosmah is disliked because of her physical weight, but rather the weight of the corruption allegations against her family.
"But still, we should refrain from making personal attacks," said the DAP lawmaker.
Teo said that Harapan should work towards eliminating the use of such tactics in their political campaigns.
Kedah Wanita Umno: Dr M crossed the line
Similarly, DAP's Batu Kawan MP MP Kasthuri Patto said she also rejected personal attacks, whether it is related to a person's physique or sexual orientation.
On Mahathir's remarks, she however echoed Zuraida's arguement that it was made in the context of rejecting alleged acts of corruption.
"I believe the tongue in cheek comment by Mahathir was in regard to excessive wealth and (the alleged) excessive and impulsive spending of taxpayers' money by a person married to a leader in office," she said.
Taking to Twitter, Youth and Sports minister Khairy Jamaluddin yesterday criticised Mahathir for his remarks, implying that the former premier is abled to get away with it.
"Bet he gets free pass for fat shaming a woman. Free pass. All day, everyday," he tweeted.
Unlike those in the opposition, Kedah Wanita Umno chief Sharifah Maznah Syed Kassim Barakbah said Mahathir had crossed the line when ridiculing a woman's figure for political mileage.

"On behalf of Wanita Umno, I regret this insult against women, whether it was directed towards an individual or women in general.
"This insult does not only affect our dignity but it undermines our capabilities as women," she stressed.
In another speech in Selayang last night, Mahathir said it was not his problem if an overweight person felt slighted by his remarks.- Mkini
